Political cartoonist

Dick Gibson was born in Sault Ste. Marie. He moved to Toronto in 1960 and then to Brampton in 1972. From 1960 until 1975 he worked as a freelance artist as well as working in broadcasting at CHFI/CFTR from 1965 'til 1973.

In 1975 he joined the Toronto Sun as an artist/cartoonist, but had to leave the Sun in 1993 due to poor health. During that time he worked as a lay-out artist as well as doing cartoons for the editorial, lifestyle, travel and money sections of the paper.

From the late 70's until the mid 80's he produced a weekly cartoon for the Brampton Guardian. He was also featured across Canada with the Thomson News Service.

On the more serious side of art, he liked to paint using mostly an air brush and mixed media. His drawing of Terry Fox became the official poster of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards.

Gibson was also a member of both the American and Canadian Association of Editorial Cartoonists.

Artway paid tribute to Dick's life in the start of December, 2002. This nine day retrospective remembered to the beloved cartoonist and his works.
