Curry's
Depending on where in Brampton you live, there's two options:
one of the oldest locations of the chain is near the Mississauga/Etobicoke
border, at The Queensway East at Cawthra, a newer location is
in Oakville, near to Sheridan College. Other retail locations
are in Toronto (Yonge at College, Queen St W at Portland, Dundas
St W at McCaul), Markham, Whitby, Hamilton, and Barrie. (Curry's
formerly had a Brampton location, which was shut down on 10 April
2004; it was replaced by location in Montreal.)
DeSerres: The Artist's Marketplace (formerly Loomis Art
Store and Loomis and Toles)
Your other main option is DeSerres. First opened in our area as
Loomis and Toles a decade or two back, they had a location in
northern Mississauga for a few years. That location has closed,
sadly, so you're left with two main options. There is a DeSerres
store on the Mississauga/Oakville border, and one in the Vaughan
Mills mall.
Where else?
There's independent stores in Toronto, but primarily in the downtown.
Best choices include Woolfitt's and Aboveground Art.
Michael's Arts and Craft
More of a craft store than one for artists, Michael's is the
closest to most Bramptonians. Their prices can be higher in many
cases, than either of the two main art supply chains. If you're
wanting to shop their, consider waiting until their bi-weekly
flyer comes out in The Brampton Guardian; most of the time,
it includes a 40% or 50% off coupon, which brings the prices down
to much more reasonable levels.
