I was born in Guelph, Ontario and I received my B.A. from York
University and my B.Ed. from the University of Toronto. In 1974
my husband and I moved to our 50 acre organic cow-calf farm between
Nobleton and Schomberg.
I have taken numerous courses to learn how to use watercolors
to achieve highly realistic, lifelike results. I started painting
precise botanicals, progressed to bird subjects then decided to
paint what I know best farm life. I love painting our own animals
plus those of farming friends. For the most part I prefer animal
portraits, close up head shots. I also paint commissions.
I paint regularly with Kaleidoscope, a group of five York Region
friends. An article called Donna Greenstein: No Bird of
a Feather in The Sentinels Tapestry Magazine was written
by Wendy Soloduik in the Spring 2009 issue.
I was the Treasurer of Botanical Artists of Canada for four years
and am now the Treasurer of
the Schomberg Horticultural Society.
I have exhibited with the King Studio Tour 2008 and 2009 and
King Museum, Schomberg Village Street Gallery 2009, Daniels
Restaurant in Nobleton 2008 and 2009, The Aird Gallery 2007 and
Canada Blooms 2006 and 2007. I had a solo show at Skylight Gallery
in Aurora.
She has won best in show awards for her art, at the 2008 Ontario
Horticultural Association AGM and 2008 Schomberg Horticultural
Fair, recieved honourable mentions from the Botanical Artists
of Canada (2007) and Lifethreads Art Show (2009), and was
in the top ten artworks at the 2009 Royal Agricultural Winter
Fair.
Joan
Hamilton, of Toronto, digital watercolour artist
Canadian digital watercolour painter Joan A Hamilton paints traditional
subjects in an untraditional way. Her website features her online
gallery of nature landscapes, flowers and still life paintings.
All are painted from scratch without the use of filters or special
effects. Her blog features many tutorials and small demonstrations
of her digital watercolour painting techniques with Corel Painter
11. She talks about the ups and downs of being an emerging digital
painter on her art journey. Her art is regularly featured on the
art and photography site Red Bubble where she co-hosts a group
called Fine Art Digital Painters. She is also an avid member of
the Painter Talk Forum. Joan's paintings can also be found on
Flickr, ArtWanted and Fine Art America.
Her beautiful art has been described as elegant, but down to
earth. Her use of colour and light bring a fresh and vibrant look
to her painting subjects, and people continually express amazement
that her art is painted digitally. A love of art and a need to
paint have led Joan to this relatively new creative process. Although
she is primarily untaught; she has begun to master the skill of
using digital watercolours and is reaching one of her goals which
is to produce art that is affordable and appealing.
Paul Highgate, of Brampton, is a Visual Arts Brampton member.
This exhibit will be the debut of two new scratchboard animal
artworks.
Janice
Ykema, of Mississauga
Janice Ykema was raised on the outskirts of the picturesque town
of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Her interest in art was firmly established
by the age of thirteen. At the tender age of seventeen she attempted
the rigorous juried entry process of the Ontario College of Art
and was accepted into their first year program. She finally obtained
her B. DES at Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto in
2005, having delayed her dream of art in order to raise a family.
Janice never lost sight of her initial goal. Life, family, travel
and maturity continued to foster within her a growing understanding
that would finally burst forth in a full time art career. One
could never say her paintings fit into a straight jacket of a
single, particular 'style'. What motivates her to create is a
desire to express her inward visions, personal experiences, imaginings,
and memories. Her paintings are not a destination, but a journey
within herself, which produces a multi-layered, refreshed vision
of the world expressed as either realistic, abstract or something
in between.
Janices need to express her artistic vision has set a new
life path starting in 2006, resulting in an explosion of creativity
that immediately resulted in successfully exhibiting in juried
shows, culminating in awards for three of her pieces at their
respective first showings.
Janice is a member of Visual Arts of Ontario, Visual Arts of Mississauga,
Artworks of Oakville, Streetsville Artists Co-op, Neilson Park
Creative Centre and The Etobicoke Artists Group and founder of
the Waterford juried show for young people.
