Visual Arts Brampton is presenting a gala Silent Art Auction entitled Gold Mine '89 at the Region of Peel Art Gallery, Wednesday, Dec. 6. Artwork may be viewed from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Former Ontario premier Bill Davis will officially open the show at 8 p.m. and bidding will take place from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Sixty-three pieces of original artwork from 41 of Peel's most prestigious artists will be on the block.

The Silent Art Auction is Visaul Arts Brampton's first major fundraiser and has taken more than a year to organize. Money raised will go to Visual Arts Brampton and the Peel Gallery Volunteer Group. VAB hopes to raise enough money for display cases for their artwork in Peel Memorial Hospital as part of the hospital's beautification program.

The show offers the public an opportunity to buy quality artwork without the markup of a professional gallery. Many of the artists have taken into account the fundraising aspect of the auction and have lowered the prices.

In addition to the artwork, a 'gold mine' of prizes will be awarded. Every participant will recieve one free 'Stake Your Claim' prize ticket (additional tickets are $2 each). Prizes to be won include a get-away weekend for two at Paquana Cottages in Windermere, Muskoka, a limousine tour from Prestigious Limousine Service, an original political cartoon drawing from Andy Donato, a gift certificate from Gil's Antiques, lunch for two from Houston's, or a beautiful fox fur boa from Stephen's Furs.

Editor's Notes: You can see how old this auction is, with the reference to "a beautiful fox fur boa", which now would raise eyebrows in a whole different way.
