This whole thing is a work in progress: weve never had
a singular history of our exhibits, this is an attempt to chronicle
it all.
In 1985, then-Brampton
Arts Council board member Keith Moreau
started a Juried Art Show at the Brampton Public Library. By 1986,
Moreau had helped found Visual Arts Brampton, which took over
the show for many years. VAB and its members had shows at the
space for years, along with top artists from across the country;
in the 1970s, Norval Morrisseau had one of his first exhibits
anywhere.
In the mid-1990s, the Brampton Public Library gallery underwent
major renovation, expanding and adding climate control. Just a
few years later, in 1996, the Library decided to shut down the
space with little notice. Its successor was a quite study space.
Artway Gallery opened in April 1998
just across the road, at Bramalea City Centre, after a long duration
of fundraising. The first location was near Price Chopper, in
"The Pit", where the food court once was. When Sport
Chek decided to move into BCC, Artway's free-standing cases were
relocated to the Bowring corridor, near Eatons. When Old Navy
decided to move in to the corridor, Artway became wall-mounted
and was near to the first location. Not the most accessible of
locations, Artway eventually decided to look for a new location.
Artway opened in Shoppers World Brampton in June 2004. The four
overall location, this Artway is located on the west side of the
mall. When in opened, the northern entrance corridor was between
Winners and Grand and Toy, which is now replaced by Bluenotes.
As of January 2009, we've had roughly 43 exhibits at our current
location.
Shoppers World has allowed us to expand our reach, with Fridge
Front Gallery for youth artwork, and World
Art Gallery for mail art and postcard-sized artwork.
