Animation Portfolio Preparation for College

This class will help students applying to college animation programs prepare their portfolios with guidance from a professional animator/illustrator who graduated from the Sheridan College Bachelor of Animation program and is now a Technical Animator at Snap Inc.

Each week will consist of a different lesson catered towards specific portfolio requirements such as anatomy, character design, animation, storyboarding and layout. Students will focus on creating their best work with weekly one-on-one sessions to discuss progress and provide feedback. Students who take this class are usually applying to:

Sheridan, Seneca, Humber, George Brown & Fanshawe Colleges

Please note that taking this class will improve your portfolio but does not guarantee admission to art programs.

Workshop Experience

  • A different lesson each week, covering the subjects:
    • How to structure figure drawings
    • Anatomy of hands
    • How to design and rotate an original character
    • Animation techniques
    • How to storyboard
    • Creating perspective line drawings
  • Students will have time to work on the lesson with individual guidance from the instructor.
  • One-on-one consultations to review student work, discuss progress and provide feedback

About the Instructor

Deepanu Sumbriya

Deepanu Sumbriya is a Technical Animator at Snap Inc. (Snapchat), currently based in Brampton, Ontario. After graduating from Sheridan College's Honours Bachelor of Animation program, she has worked on a variety of projects including commercials, short films, instructional videos, mobile games and a children's book.

 

Materials

Students bring to each class:

  • Loose blank paper (and something to put under it)
  • Drawing utensils
  • Sketchbook
  • Portfolio requirements from the institution they are applying to
  • Any work in progress or completed portfolio pieces. Please keep in mind that a good animation portfolio takes months of preparation, so continue to work on portfolio pieces between sessions and after the workshop has concluded.
