Portrait Pencil Drawing

Ideal for the beginner, and a great refresher for those you have had limited experience. Working through exercises from the standard structures of a portrait to drawing proficiency of the planes and features of a face. Strictly working with pencils and photo references, students learn to recognize how light and shadow enhances a portrait drawing.

This course consists of step-by-step instructions, with lots of demos and exercises.

About the Instructor

Stephanie Schirm

Stephanie Schirm began her career as a fashion designer, studying in Europe. While designing in the Toronto fashion district, she also created a number of fashion illustrations for catalogues, storyboards, and advertisements for current Canadian Designers.

She eventually left the fashion industry to become a graduate of OCAD in Communication and Design. Only then to enter the Liturgical world of Design, where she established Labyrinth Studios Inc, designing and manufacturing religious garments and sanctuary décor for Churches across Canada and the US.

Her passion for drawing, painting and designing lead her to sharing her knowledge, over 10 years ago with the Continuing Education in Guelph and as Fashion Illustration instructor for Mohawk College in Hamilton. Since then she has taught in a number of different establishments thorough out the GTA area.

 

Materials

Students are asked to bring the following materials to class:

  • Canson XL Drawing pad: 70lbs- 11x14 – Smooth Surface
  • Small Set of graphite pencils – Staedtler brand …. If they are cheap the graphite grades are poor.
  • Kneadable Eraser
  • Xacto – knife from
  • Sandpaper

Students are advised to purchase materials after receiving confirmation the class is running as scheduled. Confirmation will be sent to students one week in advance of the start date.
